If you are stopped and questioned by immigration officials about your status, what should you do? If your status is other than a US citizen, what should one do?

Even undocumented aliens or those that are considered EWI entry without inspection can exercise their 5th Amendment right against self incrimination.

So whether you answer or not to immigration or local police enforcement is up to you.

ok, but can the IO detain/arrest you so they can figure out your status?

Yes, the Immigration Officer can detain you to figure out your status. Usually, if you are being questioned by an immigration officer, its because they already know your status, and are already looking for you. Now, if its a police officer questioning you on a different matter, then there should be no detention _base_d on immigration grounds.

thank for your reply, in such case, let's say they do not know who you are but immigration officers stop you at the airport where you went to drop off a friend for example (it could be any other situation), is it valid to show a notarized copy of your I94 + your drivers license?
